A Short update to the article below about Smoke Alarms being made available by us to the residence of our community. Yesterday, the volunteers of Shepherdstown Fire Department had the privilege to give out - at NO COST - 26 smoke alarms to residence of our community. These volunteers even took the time to install a few for people!

If you, or someone you know is in need of the life saving tool, please reach out to us. You can send an email via this webpage, call the firehouse at 304-876-2311, or stop on by. We look forward to outfitting every home in Jefferson County with a working smoke alarm!

Smoke Alarms Safe Lives, and We Have Them PDF Print E-mail

The members of the Shepherdstown Fire Department have you, your family, and your property on our minds. Few members of the community realize how easily — and how quickly — fire can harm your loved ones. Before you even begin to speak about the harm fire can do, you must take a glance at the deadly effects of smoke alone. Fortunately, there is a simple, affordable way to help prevent a tragedy from smoke or fire: the smoke alarm.

By providing an early warning in the event of fire or smoke conditions, smoke alarms will aid in giving you and your family sufficient time to reach safety. Experts document that residents of a home with detectors may cut their risk of death in a home fire in half simply by having a smoke alarm installed. Smoke alarms are available at nearly all hardware, department and discount stores, often for under $20. So don’t delay – get out there and buy one.

The peace of mind you’ll have from knowing that you and your family is safe and secure is worth the investment. However, as I previously stated, the Shepherdstown Fire Department has you and your loved ones on our mind. We have successfully obtained, on your behalf, smoke alarms we are giving away to our community at NO COST TO YOU.

If you are a member of our community and need a smoke alarm, please call our station – 304-876-2311. We will gladly give you a smoke alarm and, if it's necessary, install it for you as well.

If you currently have smoke alarms in your home, but have not checked or replaced the batteries, please do so. In an effort to assist you, SFD has obtained funds to provide 9V Batteries for the entire purpose of making sure you have a new power source for your existing alarms.

We would like to thank a couple local business in our community for aiding in our effort to outfit the citizens of Jefferson County with smoke alarms:

The Home Depot of Charles Town/Ranson has donated Smoke Alarms for the cause.

Fargo Insurance Group, Inc has donated funds to provide batteries to power the alarms.

First Nationwide Test of the Emergency Alert System PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bob Burner
Tuesday, 01 November 2011 13:02

As part of their ongoing efforts to keep our country and communities safe during emergencies, the Federal Communications Commission and Federal Emergency Management Agency will conduct the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). The EAS test plays a key role in ensuring the nation is prepared for all hazards, and that the U.S. public can receive critical and vital information, should it ever be needed.  The first nationwide test will be conducted Wednesday, November 9 at 2 p.m. ET.  This test may last up to three and a half minutes, and will be transmitted via television and radio stations within the U.S., including Alaska, Hawaii, the territories of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa. Similar to local emergency alert system tests, an audio message will interrupt television and radio programming indicating: “This is a test.” When the test is over, regular programming will resume.  For more information about the nationwide Emergency Alert System test, please visit http://www.fema.gov/medialibrary/media_records/6407 and www.FCC.gov.   On November 9 at 2 p.m. EDT, please remember: Don’t stress; it’s only a test.
