Winter is upon us and it is time to start taking those extra precautions to keep yourself safe throughout the winter months. Just a few things to keep in mind as we prepare for snow and ice.

  • Driving conditions can and will become hazardous in a moments notice. If you must be on the roads in poor conditions remember to maintain a safe following distance. Try for 7-10 car lengths from the vehicle in front of you. An easy way to measure this is to note when the vehicle in front of you passes a permanent object, and count to 10 slowly. If your front bumper reaches that same object before 7-10 seconds, slow down. As you come to an intersection, begin to prepare for the stop as soon as the intersection comes into your view. This will allow you adequate time to come to a complete stop and avoid those pesky slick spots.
  • If you burn a wood stove, schedule to have your flu inspected and cleaned immediately. Unfortunately, the fire department will not inspect or clean the flu. If you suspect a problem with your chimney, please refrain from use. If you are using your wood burning stove and you suspect a chimney fire, close all dampers, and call 911 immediately.
  • A fall on ice can cause a great deal of damage. Please keep sidewalks in front of your house clear of snow and ice. Steps leading to your door, and any other hazardous area should be kept clear as well.
These are simple things you can do to help make it through another winter safely. We are here to help in any way we can! On behalf of the Shepherdstown Fire Department, have a safe and enjoyable winter!
