Safety Check

CAUTION WHEN COOKING
Keep cooking areas clear of combustibles and wear short or tight-fitting sleeves when you cook. Keep the handles of your pots turned inward so they do not over-hang the stove. If grease catches fire, carefully slide a lid over the pan and smother the flames, then turn off the burner.

On Monday, September 7, SFD welcomed six new members who have volunteered to serve the department and the community. The new members are Nicholas Agnew, Brittany Breon, Scott Cooper, Matthew Sullivan, Torrey Wacaster, and Christopher Woynicz.  Wacaster was also accepted as a Live-In in SFD's program that offers members living accommodations in exchange for responding on emergency alarms.  Cooper, who joined as an associate member, is also a regular member at IFC in Ranson.  Additional membership action included a change of category for associate member Brooke Shipe to regular member.  Probationary members Ryan Andersen and Melissa Bennett were also promoted to full membership status.  SFD is grateful to have each of these members on board and looks forward to working with them.

august 096.jpgOn Sunday night, September 6, SFD was alerted for a Motor Vehicle Collision with injuries and entrapment.  The first responder on scene reported two priority 1 patients entrapped with heavy damage and a utility pole snapped.  Extrication crews quickly freed the patients while EMS providers worked to stabilize patient injuries.  Both patients were transported to a landing zone from which they were flown to trauma centers.

Responding to the scene along with SFD were Independent Fire Company, Shepherdstown Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Jefferson County Emergency Services Agency, and off-duty Shepherd University Police. An engine from Sharpsburg VFC established the landing zone nearby.
