At 0301hrs the Shepherdstown Fire Department along with ALS 11 and Jefferson County Company 4 (Independent Fire Company) were dispatched for a Motor Vehicle Accident with unknown Injuries. Just after Rescue Engine 3, Medic 4, and Engine 4 marked en route Jefferson County Communications updated the incident to a Motor Vehicle Accident with Fire and entrapment. Rescue Engine 3 personell immediately began to supress the fire that was engulfing the vehicle, and the brush and trees around the vehicle were ignited as well. Unfortuantely, the occupant in the vehicle was pronounced dead on the scene by the West Virginia Medical Examiner. Fire crews from Shepherdstown and Independent cleared the scene approximately 05:33hrs. |

Two volunteer firefighters from West Virginia lost their lives fighting a structure fire in the Cottle area of Nicholas County late Thursday night, February 19, 2009. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of these men, and their departments. In order to show our respect for these fallen brothers we have lowered our flags to half staff. |

Early evening of Saturday, February 21, 2009 the Shepherdstown Fire Department along with Bakerton Fire Department, Independent Fire Department, and Friendship Fire Department were dispatched to Brian Patch Lane for flames showing from the chimney. Truck 3 arrived on scene followed by Rescue Engine 3, and Medic 3 just after Bakerton Engine 7, and Friendship Engine 1. Truck 3 crews laddered the roof and made way up to secure the top of the chimney. Truck 3 crew swept the chimney with chains, and eventually had to protect the roof of the structure from spreading fire. Rescue Engine 3 crews ensured that any fire inside of the structure was contained and extinguished. Fire crews cleared the scene approximately 2 hours after dispatch. |
